Photo selection by Les Calverley:

Having lived in Goldsboro Road (alongside Nine Elms MPD from 1948 to September 1967) I spent a lot of time photographing and visiting the shed (sometimes officially). I also applied in 1963 for a position as Engine Cleaner but decided against it due to the rundown of steam on the Southern and lack of future job prospects. My lasting memory is the deafening silence from the 10th July 1967 onwards.

These photos were taken by myself and my cousin Alan Slayford during our numerous visits there together.

The engineman leaning from 34090 'Sir Eustace Missenden' is Driver, Bill Rabetts of Eastleigh - thanks to Bob Cartwright for identifying him. The loco is about to leave Southampton Central for Waterloo on which I travelled having just seen my team hammered 6-0 by Southampton! This was in February 1967.
