Making Tracks to Virginia City features on train, trackside and locomotive scenes of today’s Virginia and Truckee Railroad. We meet Bob and Tom Gray, founder and operator of the Railroad, and Bob Gray describes the early years of the Railroad’s revival between Virginia City and Gold Hill. There is a tour of the railroad shops, a ride on the diesel powered trip to Gold Hill, and the film concludes with a steam trip over the newly extended tracks from the outskirts of Carson City. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad connected Reno and Carson City with Virginia City Nevada by 1872, bringing mining materials in and taking silver and gold ore out, and was one of the most famous short lines in America. The recently reconstructed 10 mile section to Carson City Eastgate Depot was funded through a combination of county, state and federal grants totalling over $40 million. The line from Gold Hill to near Carson City was reopened over 70 years after it had been abandoned. Tracks are being extended further to follow the Carson River.
