May 12-13 - Cass, Elkins West Virginia - Cass Spring Photo Special. The primary purpose of these trips is to recreate the bygone era of a West Virginia logging railroad. The logging train will consist of two (Saturday) or one (Sunday) geared locomotives, four log cars and a caboose. Railfans ride on the "photo" train which will have a Shay locomotive, a caboose, three tourist cars and an "open" car. On Sunday morning, from the rear of the "open" car, one can watch and photograph the log train engine as it pushes a log car up the steep mountain grades. We plan to use both the Heisler and Shay 4 that is completing its multi-year restoration. Trips are limited to about 75 patrons. All photo locations are manicured for quality photography. The log train (some cars with logs!) is free of tourist cars and railfans. The Saturday trip begins with the spectacular "Three train race" (three trains on three parallel tracks). The Sunday trip is on the ex-Western Maryland RR (now the West Virginia Central). The Photo Specials provide many unique opportunities that are not offered by the regular Cass tourist trains or any of the other special trips run at the Cass Scenic Railroad. About 30 photo runbys will be made during the two-day event.
