Audio Track List
Part One - Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
This 46 mile remnant of the Rio Grande three foot gauge network climbs over 2,700 feet from Durango to the old mining town of Silverton following the Animas River through often inaccessible wild canyon scenary.
Track 1 - 1min 39sec We are ontrain with ex-Rio Grande Durango & Silverton 2-8-2 K36 #480 as it heads the morning train for Silverton through the streets of Durango, and then as the train picks up speed through the relatively flat open valley north of the town. October 2, 2006.
Track 2 - 4min 17sec Again ontrain with K36 #480 crossing the US550 highway at Hermosa, then the grade increases to 2.5% (1 in 40) as the train climbs through the trees. In the seven mile climb to Rockwood the track rises 722 feet. October 2, 2006.
Track 3 - 2min 50sec The southbound train emerges from the cutting just south of the 'High Line' and struggles up the short climb towards Rockwood Cut - we are at rail level within a few feet of the locomotive (K36 2-8-2 #480, July 14, 2003).
Track 4 - 6min 19sec K36 #482 northbound entering Beaver Creek Canyon south of Rockwood October 3 2006.
Track 5 - 5min 53sec Distant sounds of K36 #481, whistles for the old County Highway crossing above Shalona Lake, then almost disappears, before the sound level increases again and the train rounds the corner, running along the cliffs of Beaver Creek Canyon with the sounds echoing off the rocks before disappearing towards Rockwood then whistles in the distance for the station. October 3, 2006.
Track 6 - 2min 21sec Double-header with K28 #473 leading K36 #480 around the red granite Beaver Creek Canyon cliffs south of Rockwood July 16 2003.
Track 7 - 2min 41sec Ontrain sounds of the northbound train with K36 #480 calling at the Tall Timber Wilderness Resort request stop. The voices of excited passengers are quickly eclipsed by the exhaust of the locomotive quickly gathering speed. October 2, 2006.
Track 8 - 4min 48sec K36 #480 stops just short of Needleton tank, then eases forward as the fireman opens the tender water filler hatch - the hose is dropped into the hatch and the water flows - the engine whistles and the hose is withdrawn - then 480 restarts past the dripping hose, the exhaust echoing through the trees and off the rocks, with the rushing water sounds of the River Animas always in the background. October 2, 2006.
Track 9 - 2min 17sec The last and narrowest part of the upper Animas Canyon at mp 495 - full of wind, smoke and noise - at 1m 16s the K36 #481's engineer spots the trackside recorder and opens the throttle wide. October 3, 2006.

Part Two - Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad
The Cumbres & Toltec meanders along the New Mexico/Colorado stateline over 64 miles between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado, and includes the infamous 4% (1 in 25) 13 mile climb from Chama (altitude 7863 feet) to Cumbres Pass (10,015 feet). The lighter K27 and heavy K37 2-8-2's are unserviceable in 2008, but sounds of these engines recorded in 1997 have been included for your enjoyment.
