JOHN CANT - extract from his 1958 Diary - No 2 Link Nine Elms

This shows some of the variety of work available to footplate men of No.2 Link in 1958. Also it is should be remembered when a fireman was 'as ordered' (spare man to cover anyone reporting sick, etc) could find himself on duties such as preparation and disposal in the shed, the Morden Milk, the Chessington Goods with a Class Q1, a Class 700 in the Wimbledon area or on a Merchant Navy on such trains as the 'Bournemouth Belle'.

1958 was a very good year in No.2 Link as one got a good variety of work whereas No.1 Link was only a 12 weeks roster. Although you worked some of the well known trains, No.1 Link did not have the variety and the drivers were of the old school who got on and off the loco at each end of a duty and the rest was down to you as the fireman.

Booking on time: If a fireman has to prepare his engine he would often arrive a half to one hour early as the one hour allowed was not enough for a large engine. Oil and tools had to be collected from the stores, fire made up slowly, fill, trim and light lamps if required, check every thing, top up with coal and water, arrange correct head code of the train you were to work from Waterloo on the tender. Often you had also to get underneath and oil up the inside motion for the driver as he was too old or too large to climb up inside. One often got this time back on the disposal as you were allowed two hours to empty smoke box, ash pan, clean fire and get coal and water which could be done in around and hour and a half so one went home thirty minutes early.
