R.H.N. HARDY

It is with great regret that we have heard the news of the passing of Richard 'Dick' Hardy.

Wayne Smith wrote: here he is in 2008 signing my Trains Annual 1958, when I first read his articles. Sadly missed - a lovely man.

This photo taken in 1945 epitomises his great love of the ‘locomotive’ and the early days of his long illustrious career.

Obituary
The sad passing of Richard ‘Dick’ Hardy at 94 feels like the end of an era! Undoubtedly he will be sorely missed by many for he was ‘our’ tangible link with railways long before many of us were about - for sure! Always an absolute pleasure to share his company and, at this moment, remembered for his wonderful manner and his fascinating memory and recall of detail that transported the ‘listener' back to such times!

The numerous tributes that I know will be made in his memory will reflect the genuine feeling of a deep loss amongst his many friends and colleagues. He was held in the highest esteem by all that knew him and indeed personally by both Tim Crowley and myself.

On behalf of the 'Nine Elms Enginemen' and the numerous footplate men from the railways where he was known during his time we salute you - Richard ‘Dick’ Hardy - a true Railwayman and Gentleman.

'God Bless’

James (Jim) Lester - 70A
